Do you want a radical kid for Christ? For the #LMMLinkup this week, I want to introduce you to Champ Thornton who has written the groundbreaking book: The Radical Book for Kids: Exploring the Roots and Shoots of Faith. (Affiliate Link: see notice at end.)
Grounding our children in faith at a young age is critical to their spiritual development.
In the book, Thorton introduces young readers to the stories of men and women who have lived out their faith in Jesus in radical ways.
“God sustained these men and women to trust him despite great opposition and difficulty,” Thorton said. “The book also focuses on the radical roots of our faith. (The word ‘radical’ comes from the Latin word ‘radix,’ which literally means ‘roots.’) So in many ways it is a ‘root’ book, leading young minds on a tour of the roots of their faith — a tour of the Bible, what it teaches, how to read it and why we should believe it and tell others about it. The Radical Book for Kids also includes radical fun with a 3,000-year-old game, a secret code, hands-on activities, fun facts and more. It’s radical strength, depth and fun.”
In The Radical Book for Kids, readers of all ages will be able to explore topics such as:
- The Bible in one sentence
- How to read the Gospels The names of God
- How we know the Bible’s true
- The secret to growing up
- How to deal with parents who aren’t perfect
- How to make good decisions In addition to these topics, there are also fun-focused and practical application chapters too.
Although intended for ages 8 to 12, the book is also great for teens. My daughter loves how it is organized and the great information. Even I learned interesting facts as I read it.
The book goes beyond the Bible and also relates wonderful stories about people who have served God through the ages including Lottie Moon. Every year, our church takes up donations for Lottie Moon Missions. Lottie Moon served as a missionary to China and inspired thousands of men and women to enter the mission field. Since the Christmas collection campaign honoring Lottie Moon began, participating churches raised more than $3 billion for missions.
He also includes fun facts such as Scriptures that mention wild creatures and the constellations and stars.
My favorite section explains, “What God is Like.” Reading the subheadings is like reading a poem.
“God is Our Father.
God is Our Judge.
God is Our Sun
God is Our Shelter
Jesus is the Lamb
Jesus is the Lion
Jesus is the Vine
Jesus is the Pioneer Blazing A Trail for Us to Follow
The Holy Spirit is Like the Wind
The Holy Spirit is Like A Bird
The Holy Spirit is our Helper
The Holy Spirit is like Oil
In our Lamp of Salvation”
Packed with so much information and fun facts related to the Bible and Christianity, this book is a must add to any Christian family library.

Thanks, Mary! This sounds like a great book to consider. I only have one grandchild left in that category, but definitely want to check this book out a bit more. A few things I read remind me of what I heard this weekend at a Simeon’s Trust workshop on “First Principles” in terms of how we study and read the Bible.

Mary, this sounds like an important book. Anything we can do to facilitate the passing of the torch of faith to the next generation is worth all our effort and prayer.
